MUMBAI: Global Indian Music Awards 2012 (GIMA) is set to have a musical flashback that will pay tribute to the late Bollywood actor Rajesh Khanna.
The tribute show initiated by Saregama will be helmed by well-known music director duo Salim-Suleiman. Golden melodies by Laxmikant Pyarelal, Shankar Jaikishen, R D Burman and SD Burman amongst others that gave Khanna much of his on screen persona as a romantic hero and longevity in public memory, will be played.
Speaking to Radioandmusic.com, Suleiman said that they have been working on the tribute project for the past six months.
“We felt it was a perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the great artist and composers behind the songs. Public usually do not forget the singer, composer and actor (who lip synchs) of Bollywood classic songs,” he said.
The ‘tradition’ of associating a song with an actor was part and parcel of the film industry which is undergoing change in recent times. “I feel music-directors or composers need to be more in the forefront and many like Vishal Dadlani and Pritam have done so. Visibility is good for their music business and to make public aware of their presence (in the industry) and contribution,” Suleiman stated.
The duo’s tribute performance, to be held on 1 October, will be a grand event with live orchestra and a choir of young singers who will perform on hit songs.
Comparing the music of bygone eras with contemporary music, Suleiman said, “I don’t think its possible to compare the music of the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s or even 10 years back to the music now. Some songs will fade; others will stay on in public memory while some will inevitably become ‘golden’ after a time.”
