MUMBAI: Depicting the social scenes of Kerala through their â€?Alternative Malayali Rock’ music, Avial is now working on their second untitled album. The band will unveil a video of the first single â€?Aiyyo’ in February.
Speaking about the album, band’s lead vocalist Tony John said, We have done several versions of folk songs in the past. But our second album will focus on a combination of diverse styles of music, as Avial is a blend of different styles. The soon-to-be-released video will also be a part of a Malayalam film….
The two CD pack will comprise of the band’s movie work and the original compositions. The album is slated to release by September.

The rock band has directed music for three movies already and has recently composed for their fourth Malayalam movie â€?The Second Show’. The movie will feature three songs each with their own distinctive style. Defining the songs John said, The movie has three of our songs composed in their own individual style. One is a trance Malayalam song while the second song is a groovy and funky track. And our album track â€?Aiyyo’ which is also added in the movie depicts world music style….
When quizzed about upcoming projects, Avial claims that they are more happy focusing on gigs and albums than composing for movies. Apart from a five city tour in February the band will also perform a concert in Dubai.
The band members consisting of Rex Vijayan (lead guitar and synthesizer), Tony John (vocals, turntables and synthesizer), Mithun Puthanveetil (drums) and Binny Isaac (bass guitarist), released their first self titled album in 2008.
Avial’s recent composition â€?Suprabhatakali’ for the Times of India’s Kerala launch met with acclaim and a new-found recognition amongst audiences. We did this song in a day. It happened so fast. The shoot also happened very quickly in just three hours. This song is very different from what we have done in the past. It’s a fun song,… he added.
Commenting on the genre of rock and what separates them from the herd John remarks, We wouldn’t have reached this height if we were like the regular rock bands singing in English. It’s something that’s got to do with our roots. I think we excel better in our mother tongue than in English….
