Review: Logitech’s Ultimate Ears earphones aural treat, steep rates

MUMBAI: Digital lifestyle product manufacturer Logitech’s Ultimate Ears has been designing custom ear monitor products for music professionals for over 12 years now.

Logitech has now announced additions to its MetroFi line of Ultimate Ears earphones for listeners on the go. Here’s a peek into MetroFi 170, MetroFi 200 and MetroFi 200v –  the new members of the Logitech earphone family

All three earphones come with three-four sizes of soft silicone ear tips and a pocket ready hard case to safely store the earphones. The noise isolating earphones also claim to provide crisp high tones, clear mids and deep bass for enhanced music listening experience  The earphones provide class sound quality in a  small and lightweight form factor.

Metro.Fi 200v is the first earphones on the anvil. The earphones come with balanced microspeakers designed with sound sensitivity in-line microphone with music control button, dedicated especially for music phones (read iPhone especially). Priced at a steep Rs 6495, the earphones could well burn a hole in your pocket, specially if you are planning to buy it for music phones that are ranged lower than the iPhone

The sleek black earphones are eye candy. The cause of concern is the earbuds. The buds are not comfortable and tend to slip out  within minutes of plugging in. Though three sizes of silicone fittings are available, I was a little dissapointed with the uncomfortable fit. But once you overcome the ear buds issue, the sound quality is sheer delight. They cut the unwanted surrounding noise to give you a good listening experience with clarity in sound and give a fuller mix with more detail in the higher-frequency range for deeper bass and clear treble

MetroFi 170vi is the noise isolating earphone with voice capability and is specially designed for the high end handsets like iPhone, Blackberry and other music devices that have a 3.5mm jack like iPod and MP3 players. It’s an ideal set for listeners who do not want to buy a separate set for their mP3 player and handset. It includes an inline mic and call answer button for use with music phones. Priced at Rs 3495, the 170i comes with a very impressive pocket ready hard case to save the headphones from entangling. The noise isolating earphones are one of the cheapest set launched by the company so far

The ear buds (again a little uncomfortable) is complete with opaque red enclosure. There is no doubt on the quality of music that’s disseminated from the earphones. The ear buds create a vacuum and the unwanted outside noise is blocked to quite some extent. With clear and detailed sound, users can appreciate the finer nuances of music.

The versatility of the earphones are the major plus points. It is equally compatible with all the gadgets and offers high quality sound, that  music lovers prize so much. Priced aptly at Rs 3495, the multi utility earphones are a big saviour for people who own various gadgets – since this one can be used for Apple products, other MP3 players as well for those owning Blackberry. My vote goes to this multi utility device which is also priced appropriately

The third earphone in the series is the Metro.Fi 200 designed for iPod and MP3 players. Priced at Rs 5495, the earphones provide a  high class listening experience. The earphones are enhanced for maximum detail and heightened noise isolation, and these high-output headphones offer good audio reproduction of music. Though steeply priced, I was happy with what I heard. With total noise isolation and supreme level of clarity in sound, these earphones are a safe bet for music lovers on the go.

Overall, I was happy with the sound quality that the headphones had to offer though the ear buds are an area of concern. The steep prices could be a stumbling  block, though most music lovers with high end products may not feel the pinch. In terms of quality of music, the ear buds score brownie points for their noise isolation feature. They also have lots to offer in terms of clarity and audio reproduction as well.

Our pick- MetroFi 170vi for being aptly priced and supporting multiple devices.
