MUMBAI: Siddhant Bhosle, son of celebrated Bollywood singer Sudesh Bhosle, at 20, is a solo act as well as the lead vocalist and frontman of alt-rock band ‘Red Seems Right’. He speaks with Radioandmusic.com about his plans with the band and hopes of being a playback Bollywood singer.

All set to perform at the Rafi tribute celebration on 2 August, Bhosle talks excitedly about sharing the stage with great musicians including Shankar Mahadevan. He says, “The industry will be paying tribute to the great Indian musician and legend Mohammad Rafi at Shanmukhanand Hall on the occasion of his death anniversary. My father will also be performing so, I am really excited.”

The young artiste recently was also a part of the RD Burman tribute which was attended by the entire music fraternity. Renowned musicians and composers like Kunal Ganjawala, Abhijeet, Anu Malik, Salim Merchant and Javed Akhtar were present at the event, which was held on 27 June. He will also be a part of another show in Bandra on 15 August where the children of music directors and singers will come together on the stage, including Shaan’s two sons.

Due to his family’s presence in the music industry, Bhosle has been exposed to the workings of the industry since he was a child. He is the great grandson of Durgabai Shirodkar, a well-known classical singer, grandson of Sumantai Bhosle, an All India Radio artiste in Mumbai and N.R Bhosle, a well-known painter of film posters and of course, the son of Sudesh Bhosle, who is a singer, a mimic artiste, a painter and needs no introduction in the industry.

Besides, his mother’s father was an integral member of the orchestral group ‘Melody Makers’ which was extremely popular a few decades ago. It is only natural that Siddhant is as versatile as his predecessors, exceptionally trained in classical music as well as pursuing western music. Living up to the hopes expected of him must be stressful, to which he says, “It is not exactly pressure because I love what I do and I love that they push me to be better.”

As a child, Siddhant lent his voice to a few songs in the film ‘Bal Ganesh’ duetting with Hariharan, and a few other movies which also had him sing a duet with Sunidhi Chauhan. He has also sung for a couple of Marathi movies, acted as a voice artiste for the Marathi version of Phineas and Ferb and other shows on Nickelodeon. He explains, “I have been exposed to so much music since I was very young. Seeing that my family comes from a line of people involved in the industry, I really want to follow their footsteps. My main goal is Bollywood playback singing and it has always been a dream. But, at the same time, I also want to make music varying across genres. I cannot deny that there has not been any western influence.”

Once in college, Bhosle, along with his friends, formed the band Red Seems Right, which is quite popular in Mumbai right now. They performed at Live From The Console in January this year which came after numerous gigs in college festivals and other events. Their single ‘Make Me Believe’, composed by Bhosle, was an immediate favourite among their fans and the audiences. The artiste reveals that they are releasing another single in a week which is titled ‘Summer’. As a band, their influences lie in artistes like Porcupine Tree, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Karnivool, Maroon 5, Incubus, Pink Floyd, John Mayer, etc.

The singer-songwriter confesses, “I really look up to John Mayer who is a brilliant guitarist and songwriter. He can do everything – he composes his own songs, sings them while playing his guitar.” He is also a big fan of vocalist and music director Vishal Dadlani, the one man who has successfully balanced both his mainstream as well as independent music career as frontman of Pentagram. Bhosle adds, “I have always looked up to great musicians like Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. They have been legendary in the Indian music scene.”

Bhosle states that till now he has not been approached by anyone with offers and is still concentrating on training that he is receiving from the great Ghulam Mustafa Khan, recipient of Padma Shri as well as Padma Bhushan.

He expresses, “I want to be in the music scene and work with many music directors. I have always wished to work with Pritam, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Vishal Shekhar, Amit Trivedi and others. They are all such geniuses.”
