MUMBAI: He was the David who gave sleepless nights to the Goliath. After settling scores with filmmaker Rakesh Roshan last year, composer Ram Sampath has a couple of projects on his plate this year
Sampath has bagged two big projects for Aamir Khan’s Productions, “Dhobi Ghaat” and “Delhi Belly”. While “Delhi Belly” is being directed by ad filmmaker-turned-director Abhinay Deo, “Dhobi Ghat” is the directorial debut of Aamir’s wife Kiran Rao
Talking about the music of the film, Sampath says, Both the movies have insane sound tracks, full of surprises. The music of Dhobhi Ghat is really eclectic and very experimental. I must say that it is very courageous on Kiran’s part to incorporate music like this in her film.

Delhi Belly has Bhojpuri punk and some very adventurous tracks. A lot of surround sound has been used. At the same time, it is very minimalistic. It’s going to be very earthy and organic – the focus would be more on the raw sound with subdued electronic elements.” The versatile music composer is working with writers like Akshat Verma for the title track of Delhi Belly and Amitabh Bhattacharya of Dev D fame. The music of the film will release in a couple of months
Talking on the issue of plagiarism Sampath says, What goes around comes around. Those who are resorting to such things will bear the brunt of it in the future….
After the issue with Roshan’s it was difficult to find work. But things are much brighter now and I have my hands full with couple of film and non-film projects to be released by the end of the year….
Sampath also has Film City… with UTV which will release by the end of the year. The lyrics of the film have been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, who wrote for Dev D. tHe music label though hasn’t been decided
The music director is also judging a new reality show, Kurkure Desi Beats Rock On with MTV, that captures the entire process of the hunt for India’s new Desi Rock Band. Sampath will judge the show along with singer Kailash Kher and VJ Nikhil Chinappa. Rock as a genre of music was always around but now it has now got into the mainstream…. The desi factor will be very important for the band since we don’t want another routine band to play some English songs that we have heard a zillion times.
The winning band will cut an album with T-series and will be promoted extensively to make sure that they do not fade and become one song wonders,… explains Sampath.
Sampath also has an album with his singer wife Shona. The album is titled Raat Din. “It’s a concept album having songs of the day and songs of the night,” he says. The album is yet to be signed on by any label. He is also considering an international release for Raat Din. The album will have some collaboration with the ethnic eastern artistes,… says Samapth. The album will release at the end of the year
