Somehow, Ram-Leela is said to be a big film. There are many reasons for the same. One is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film is all set to hit the silver screen after a span of three years. His last film was ‘Guzaarish’ in the year 2010 starring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan. Secondly the plot of the film is based on Romeo and Juliet, so one can expect sizzling chemistry between the drop dead gorgeous Deepika Padukone and the muscular Ranveer Singh. Coming back to the music of the film, one would say that after a very long time maverick Sanjay Leela Bhansali has set his eyes on Gujarati folk music. Glimpses of it were seen in the film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, though in bits and pieces. However, this time the filmmaker has entirely taken up the task of composing music for his film. Paying a tribute to the legendary music composers, lyricists and singers, he went on to include ten songs in the album (phew!). Being a Sanjay Leela Bhansali flick, the audience expectations are riding high. But does it live up to the expectation or proves to be a dud? Read on to find out.
Ram Chahe Leela:
The album opens up with the winner of Indian Idol 5 Bhoomi Trivedi. The track has a folk-rock feel and commences with a conversation in Guajarati which sounds like a pre- gig, reminding you of a ‘dairo’ (a Gujarati comedy musical show) and the song suddenly takes a serious turn. Kudos to Bhoomi Trivedi, who does the song complete justice.
Lahu Muh Lag Gaya:
The catch of the song is the Antara, coupled with heavy traditional instruments and that Gujarati touch. As the song proceeds, it turns into a complete slow track with heavy beats of ‘dhol’ and turns boring and slow, which is ultimately a disappointment. The vocals are rendered by Shail Hada.
Ang Laga De:
‘Passion’ is the word that comes to our minds when you hear this song as the Indian Idol 1 contestant Aditi Paul does an amazing job singing this slow romantic number. The song does not go down well with your ears, but it grows on you, meaning you just cannot to skip it from your playlist. The lyrics of the song exhibit lust and passion, thus one can expect some sizzling scenes between Ranveer and Deepika.
Poore Chand:
Poore Chand is a slow romantic track. It reminds you of the Aishwarya and Salman’s Chand Chupa Badal Mein. Needless to say, that track was more soulful and soothing compared to this on. Shail Hada has done a fair job of rendering the vocals.
Nagada Sang Dhol:
Nagada Sang Dhol is an energetic track with heavy beats of claps, nagada and dhol. The track is ideal for ‘garba’ and reminds you of Dholi Taro from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Shreya Ghoshal just does a brilliant job, giving the album the much needed spark.
Laal Ishq:
The first few musical notes of the song remind you of the background score from the film Devdas. The track is extremely slow and graduates to the status of boring. The semi-classical number is sung by Arijit Singh (Aashiqui 2).
Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun:
Simply put, the track is a serious misfit to the album and does not impress you at all. Aditya Narayan has rendered vocals for the song. The song lacks appeal. Period.
Mor Bani Thanghat Kare:
The song is a blend of Gujarati and Rajasthani folk. Osman Pir’s voice is spectacular and it is hard to miss the track.
Dhoop:
The song takes you back to the era when Lata Mangeshkar sung those signature haunting tracks. She does an amazing job, adding soul to the song.
Tattad Tattad:
Now, this is one song which you can’t miss. Aditya Narayan makes no mistakes and is just perfect. It could have been the best track in the album, had the lyrics been better.
Overall, the entire album is neither too good nor too bad. There are a few songs for which Sanjay Leela Bhansali deserves a pat on the back, but a lot of them are a complete disappointments. Tracks that make the album a worthwhile listen: Dhoop, Nagada Sang Dhol and Lahu Muh Lag Gaya.
