MUMBAI: Saregama has launched Timeless Classics Srinivas, a ghazal album featuring classics originally sung by the King of Ghazals Mehdi Hassan, rendered by well known singer from the south, Srinivas, a prot?©g?© of A R Rahman who is said to have overlooked the creation of the album.
Timeless Classics Srinivas represents Saregama’s confidence in the ghazals genre. Adarsh Gupta, Head of Music – Saregama India Ltd, said, Saregama has a long standing presence in the Ghazal genre with renditions from the biggest names of the past We believe this genre is in urgent need of revival and therefore, we constantly look for new offerings in this space….
The album features Srinivas’ renditions of Mehdi Hassan classics like Bhooli Bisri Chaand Ummedein, Patta Patta Buta Buta, Rafta Rafta Woh Meri Hasti Ka Saamaan Ho Gaye, Aab Ke Hum Bichde, among others. Srinivas, winner of two best singer awards from Tamil Nadu, and one from Kerala, has sung over 1000 songs in films like Lagaan, Sapnay, Dil Chahta Hai, among others, with the latest being Rajnikanth’s Robot, says, This album has been a labor of love for me. It echoes my love for ghazals and the one and only Mehdi Hassan Saheb. He taught me how music can touch the deepest recesses of one’s soul and liberate one from a humdrum existence….
For its musical arrangements, Srinivas has preferred a contemporary style instead of the traditional harmonium and tabla. I have tried to give the ghazal a new look and feel, but I have been careful to keep the essence and the spirit of the ghazal,… he says, adding, I must thank my friend Hentry Kuruvila for helping me find the way and for making the musical arrangements of this album truly spectacular. Hentry’s passion towards his music is what makes this album special. The creative inputs have enhanced the musical value of this album.
