MUMBAI: FM stations across the country have joined hands to celebrate World Music Day on 21 June.
Stations have lined up an array of programs to bring melody to the listener’s ears today. Red FM, My FM, Big FM and Radio City are few of the stations who have various interesting interactive initiatives, a mix of on-air talk shows, contests, call-ins, live performances and on-ground events surrounding music across stations.
Big FM is showcasing the musical talents of singers and musicians across genres of music, be they renowned, upcoming or aspiring artists.

All Big stations across India have planned special customised programming around the day – special capsules celebrating the occasion, interesting trivia on music, contests and playing listeners favourite music all day long.

My FM has lined up a number of innovative activities including music based contests, RJ choice of special song, famous music composer’s interviews to rejoice on the Music Day along with its listeners.

Red FM in its effort to bring music into the life of its listeners has tied up with music store Planet M to celebrate the sprit of Music across Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.
In a day long activity, Red FM will run a unique music contest called ‘Kaan Mein Dum Hai to Aaa’ where Red’s RJs will dare listeners to prove their musical mettle on air by recognizing snippets of songs, answering trivia questions, etc. This contest will also be extended across Planet M outlets. Listeners stand to win on the spot Gift Hampers and Mobile Phones sponsored by Planet M.

Radio City has also lined-up an array range of innovative activities for Radio Cityzens across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Lucknow and Hyderabad. The FM station is bringing together India’s top musical talent – musicians, music directors, and lyricists live in-studios to interact with listeners across the nation. World Music Day will see these musical doyens go behind the mike, co-host shows with Radio City’s Whatte Fun RJs and have candid, heart to heart chats with listeners.
Mumbai’s Radio City is celebrating World Music Day through a unique initiative – Mast Mast Mumbai wherein listeners from across Mumbai are collaborating to compose a song which becomes the Radio City World Music Day anthem. This song will be aired on Mumbai’s Radio City all day long on World Music Day.
Delhi’s Radio City has planned a day long musical treat for listeners. Along with the fun contests the station will feature Shauqat Ali Khan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Goshal, Taufeeq Qureshi, Strings and Delhi’s bands Advaita and Faridkot. Renowned singer and music composer Rabbi Shergill joins RJ Ved Live in-studios at 6 PM to announce the winner of the ‘Whatte Fun’ World Music Day contest.
Contrary to all the celebrations was Radio One. Its national programming head Vehrnon Ibrahim says, “World music has no appeal in India as in France, where they have a music festival called ‘World music day’. Here people have to awareness of the concept of world music how can we expect them to shell out for it in that case. It so happens that when there is a fusion between two genres or two geographical boundaries and it cannot be sorted in any genre, it is termed as world music. We might be talking about it during our night session when we air English shows, otherwise it has no relevance to our listener.”
