MUMBAI: After passing screening and other tests, ten Community Radio stations in India will be airing a new show on mathematics titled ‘Radio Mathematics’, which will cater to people from all age groups in a community.
The show will be aired in the coming months as it is getting its final touches based on feedback received by the pilot project. The project started last February at Jadavpur University, IIT Kanpur, Mumbai University and Sri Lakshmi Narayana Medical College. “We got a good response for our pilot project and based on the feedback and appreciation, we are altering the show,” said Department of Science and Technology (Govt of India) NCSTC division scientist E Ujjwala T Tirkey to Radioandmusic.com. The pilot project had 90 episodes.
“It is for the community and will showcase maths in sports, nature, music and classrooms. It displays the existence of maths in everyday life,” stressed Tirkey. The radio show consist 180 episodes and will be aired on alternate days for a year.
Community Radio Association vice-president NA Shah Ansari said, “To have a radio program shaped around mathematics is a really interesting initiative and we are looking forward to the show being aired on various community radio stations.”
It all started in 2012 to celebrate the centenary of renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. “To celebrate the centenary year, we launched many programs and at that time we decided to take something like this to radio,” said Tirkey. In the past she worked to create a radio show which catered to women and children. “We received the evaluation report, which is why we have to alter our programs. Taking maths to radio has been quite a challenge, as it is a unique concept. However we hope to create the necessary impact with this show.”
Tirkey was also behind All India Radio’s 26 episodes ‘Anko Ki Khiladi’ which is being aired on 117 stations in 19 languages. Vigyan Prasar in collaboration with NCSTC and AIR produced the radio serial on the life and work of some selected Indian and overseas mathematicians. The broadcast of the serial started in last October.
