MUMBAI: Sitar player and music director Purbayan Chatterjee has been busy with many projects lately. The latest being the DNA’s Heart Song which has a beautiful classical music and heart beats of a human being. And all this was done to celebrate the World Heart Day. To add on to this, Chatterjee through his sitar playing skills is targeting upcoming talents through his multiple projects.
Chatterjee said, “It was DNA’s idea to have a song about the heart and it took me a day or two to compose the song with heart beats.”
The music programming is done Atul Raninga and the arrangement is by Indrajit Dey.

Chatterjee is busy with multiple projects but one project that seems to be very close to his heart is Classicool. The project is promoted through the digital media agency Qyuki which is trying to revive different sides of Indian classical music for the younger generation. Chatterjee said, “Youngsters have a lesser attention span, so we have to create music videos that are shorter. It has to be put in a bass-drum format so that it would attract the attention of the youth. I have tried presenting them with the same kind of music that they enjoy listening. The video is urban, contemporary and also maintains the raga.” There will be two more videos under Classicool.
Chatterjee is in an agreement with Qyuki and will soon unveil many projects. “My partnership with Qyuki is an on-going process. There will be one project after another,” he added.
Some of his other ongoing projects include Stringstruck and Shastriya Syndicate.
He is also involved with Art and Artistes for a project which is in progress. The trailer of the video has maestros like Pandit Jasraj and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, talk about their live music journey and the way they improvise on their performance on stage. Jazz lover Chatterjee is also involved in the project and is hopeful that the project will be very helpful to many music lovers. “I contribute for their (Art and Artistes) projects on a regular basis,” he further said.
The official promo of ‘People Behind The Legends’ is out and is produced by Durga Jasraj and Neeraj Jaitly and is Avni Jasraj Mehra is the executive producer.
Chatterjee strongly believes that teaching upcoming musicians about classical music is essential even though the dominance of Bollywood music exist in India. “Our country is full of ignorant people. They all recognise only Bollywood and they hardly recognise music outside Bollywood. People do not understand the different music genres, which is why most of my projects are promoting other forms of music,” said Chatterjee, who also composes music for Bollywood. He hopes that his efforts will help to educate the upcoming generations about various forms of music.
Chatterjee is a classical musician but holds highest regards to all forms of music that exist. “I listen to rock ‘n’ roll, Bollywood, folk and others but Jazz is something is love listening to,” he exclaimed.
