MUMBAI: The 56th ‘Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav’started in 1953 to commemorate the first death anniversary of Sawai Gandharva, the noted Hindustani vocalist and Guru of Pt Bhimsen Joshi will be held between 11 and 14 December at Shaniwar Peth in Pune.
Many Well known musicians and practising artists gather in Pune to pay homage to the great musician in the form of this colourful festival, every year. The festival will see performances by artistes like Pt Shivkumar Sharma (Santoor), Pt Jasraj (Vocals), Pt Rajan and Pt Sajan Mishra (Vocals), Pt Ronu Mujumdar (Flute) and many more.
Each year the festival is organised by the disciples of Sawai Gandharva with the support of Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal and continues for four days. This year, the festival holds a special significance since Pt. Bhimsen Joshi has also been chosen for ‘Bharat Ratna’ – India’s highest civilian honour.

The event will start from 4pm and go on till 10pm for the first two days (Dec 11- Dec 13). However, the final day schedule (Dec 14) has been divided into two sessions, the first session will start from 8 a.m. and go on till noon, whereas the second half will start at 4 p.m. and go on till 10 p.m. Passes for the festival will be available from the December 3 onwards. Both season and daily passes are available for this concert. However, one cannot go ‘click-click’ and buy the festival passes as you do for Rock Cocerts – the passes are not available online!
