MUMBAI: Baajaa Gaajaa, a unique three-day expo-event specifically dedicated to Indian music and its supporting bodies, will be inaugurated by veteran lyricist Gulzar on 6 February 2009 in Pune
The expo is the brainchild of vocalist Shubha Mudgal and tabla player Dr Aneesh Pradhan who also run an independent record label named Underscore Records (www.underscorerecords.com). For the first time, a music expo is expected to bring together and provide interactive space to musicians, music lovers, scholars, instrument makers, indie record labels, publishers and a host of organizations and individuals connected with music making in 21st century India.
Over 300 musicians, 30 independent record labels, various master craftsman and 7000-8000 music lovers from across the country are looking forward for this unique annual festival to be conducted for the first time in India. Undoubtedly, the expo will prove as a melting pot for musicians and music entrepreneurs catering to varied music genres.
The other highlights of the events are Baajaa Gaajaa seminars where issues bothering the musicians will be raised. Important issues like the awareness session on financial planning schemes for musicians will be discussed on the first day. The second day will have discussion on intellectual property rights, copyright, licensing and patenting by expert speakers like Prof T N Daruwala and Chander Lall. The last day is reserved for a discussion on ‘experimental music’.
There will be one documentary film screening per day between 2 pm and 4 pm in the Seminar Hall, followed by interactive sessions with filmmakers. Films like Bishar Blues, Leaving Home: A documentary based on Indian Ocean and Laya- documentation on folk music will be screened for music enthusiasts. In addition, those who root for rare archival music can surf through the Sangeet Kendra catalog (http://sangeetkendra.org/) which will be put on display and sale at the expo
Baajaa Gaajaa is sponsored by Himalayan, Bank of India, Bank Of Maharashtra, NDTV, Lalit, Deccan Rendezvous and Le Meriden.
