MUMBAI: 44-year old bansuri wizard Pandit Ronu Majumdar performed on Friday at Mumbai`s Ravindra Natya Mandir along with renowned vocalist Devaki Pandit as part of the Ragranjan concert.
Organised by the 15-year old Khayal Trust, the concert had Majumdar performing for the first time in Mumbai after the first Bombay Jazz Tour in the UK that he attended recently.
The fest, an offspring of the Mumbai Jazz Yatra festival, had Majumdar performing with the likes of Larry Coryell and George Brooks.
Majumdar`s scintillating performance at the Raagranjan concert heralded the onset of the oncoming music season when he is slated to perform at Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Ramkrishna Mission on 10 November in New Delhi, Spirit of Unity concert, Sri Sri Satya Sai Trust, Vishakhapatnam, followed by Bangalore and Kolkata. He will also be participating at the WOMAD concert in Spain.
About his upcoming album `Ronu and His Friends`, Majumdar says, “This one marks my journey so far and features some of my contemporaries-Taufiq Qureshi, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Guitar), Tarun Bhattacharya (Santoor), Kadri Gopalnath (Saxophone), Kunwar Rajendra Singh (Swarlin) and others.”
Majumdar has also individually composed the music for the international film, Mystic India as well as the Hollywood film, Primary Colours based on President Clinton`s lifestyle, besides having performed at The Kremlin, Moscow, and Palais de Beaux Arts, Brussels. Pandit Ronu has earlier won an esteemed Grammy Nomination in the World Music category for his track Why the Sky, with John Hassles.
