MUMBAI: Psy, who performed his hit song ‘Gangnam Style’ in Times Square, New York, for the US TV show Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, claimed that it could be the ending for Gangnam Style.
The South Korean sensation, real name Park Jae-sang, said to MTV news “Being in Times Square on New Year’s Eve is already special – it’s the biggest stage in the universe – plus it’s my birthday, so, with all that, it may be the ending of ‘Gangnam Style’. “I mean, what better way to do it? It’s my biggest and most meaningful birthday.”
Psy, who turned 35 on Monday 31 December, said that he needed a new single as ‘Gangnam Style’ had become too popular and that he is keen to start working on new material. His tweet announcing the performance, which read: “Tonight on ABC with @RyanSeacrest and #RockinNewYearsEve. I prepared something and it’s gonna be #GangnamFinale!!! Watch it & Watch out!!!

But he assured fans of the tune that he is still contractually obliged to perform the hit at a number of events in 2013. The video became the first ever to surpass one billion views on YouTube. “The song became too popular, and so you start to have some concern about its life period,” he said. “I’m really working hard on a new single right now, and I’m not saying [Gangnam] is ending on Dick Clark — I still have a lot of invitations to perform it… I’ll be in Paris, and in February I got invited to perform in China, and I’ve still got to do promo. So let me say that in America I need a new single because Gangnam Style got too popular, so I’ve got to write a new single.”
The Dick Clark show, broadcast live on ABC, saw Psy perform his song alongside several guest stars, with Roh Hong-cheoul and Yoo Jae Suk (actors from the music video), and MC Hammer joining him on-stage to lead the dance.
Spotify revealed today that Gangnam Style topped the list of tracks that music lovers across the UK played as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve. Second and third place was occupied by Rihanna’s Diamonds and Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child respectively.
