MUMBAI: A couple of months after improvising their track ‘Pariquel’ for the Bollywood film ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’, New Delhi-based four-piece gypsy jazz/cabaret band Peter Cat Recording Co. (PCRC) has two tracks to be featured on screen. The tracks titled ‘The Clown on the 22nd Floor’ and ‘Happiness’ from their debut album ‘Sinema’, have been featured in the ScoopWhoop original scripted webseries ‘Baked’.
Through emails, there were requests sent to PCRC to permit the use of these tracks in the series, said vocalist Suryakant Sawhney. “The ScoopWhoop people just sent us an email, and asked us if they could use our tracks, and since none of us had any issue with it, we all agreed,” he stated.
When asked whether there was a cost added to the usage of the track, Sawhney said, “No, there was no charge. They asked us whether they could use our songs, we said yes; and that was it. There was no price attached to it. ScoopWhoop is just venturing into the digital scripted content market, and we wanted to help them.” ‘Baked’ also features music by Chennai-based rock bands Junkyard Groove and Grey Shack.

Sawhney also added that PCRC is hard at work in the studio working on the band’s new record which will be a follow-up to their 2012 ‘Wall of Want’. When asked how the record sounds so far, Sawhney said, “This time, there is more Jazz in the music, but the lyrics are apocalyptic.” He had previously stated that while lyrically the sound is the same, sonically, the band has changed it for the new record. The musical influences include old-school American, Old British and has interesting influences of African music, especially from Ethiopia.
The ‘Jaanam’ singer also said that the band is looking at launching the new record in the next couple of months. “Within a few days of the launch of the new album, we will start our nationwide tour that covers all the metros, as well as some of the Tier two cities,” continued Sawhney. He also hinted that the new record might feature another vocalist. He added, “We have been thinking about getting a singer on board for a song or two.”
