For quite a while Shalmali Kholgade has rocked the charts with songs like ‘Lat Lag Gaye’, ‘Pareshaan’ and ‘Besharmi Ki Height’. Gearing up to perform at the RED Live Concert, she talks to Radioandmusic.com about the pre gig preparations, her experience with RED Live and a lot more.
You have always performed for RED Live, how is it to perform for a platform like this?
I think it is fantastic that RED FM organises these public shows to connect artistes to their listeners. I think I am fortunate to have gotten to perform at the Red Live shows. They have always left me with a feeling of gratefulness and awe.
Tell us about your pre gig preparations
I always try to understand the kind of audience I could expect in the various cities I perform in. The objective is always to leave the audience feeling like their time with me was well spent. I work on the tracks or the band arrangements to make the songs sound fun. I work on vocally delivering the songs differently and making them interesting for the audience.
What songs are you performing for the concerts?
I will sing all the songs that I have sung previously, including ‘Pareshaan’, ‘Lat Lag Gayi’, ‘Balam Pichkari’ and the recently released ‘Besharmi Ki Height’. I will also sing some other songs that I enjoy listening to.
How do you manage concerts and recordings, as there are times that doing too many concerts affects the voice during recordings?
This is absolutely true. I learnt it the hard way when my voice was seriously not cooperating during recordings because of singing live extensively. I have stopped doing as many live shows and am focusing more on recordings and improving my vocal technique. The trick is to maintain a healthy balance.
What are your upcoming projects?
I have a handful of songs releasing which I am very excited about. Of course I cannot speak of those right now. Five songs that I have sung released with the recent Bartender Album. I have also acted in a music video for one of the songs I have sung- ‘Aaj Ki Raat’. I have also been working on a jingles album with Mikey McCleary where he has made songs out of the popular jingles he has worked on.
Bollywood was not your main focus, which is why you had one song ready from your own project. When are you going to release it?
My personal project is on the back burner right now. I have planned and planned to spend more time on it but Bollywood is a very demanding line to be in. I will release my work only when I know it is worth showcasing.
You got nominated for ‘Balam Pichkari’, but did not take the trophy home. How disappointing was that for you?
Not winning an award is never disappointing. There is never an expectation attached with a nomination which makes winning or losing equally understandable. Also, the winner, I believe deserves the award most definitely.
Are you teaming up with any new composers for your Bollywood projects?
Well, I have recorded with new music composers whom I had not worked with before but again, I cannot speak of such alliances until I hear the song has released. I am working a lot with Sachin Jigar at this point and that is something I have enjoyed a lot.
