MUMBAI: Commemorating the first death anniversary of sarangi maestro Ustad Sultan Khan, renowned musical stalwarts from the fraternity will perform a tribute concert on 18 December in Mumbai.
The concert will witness performances by renowned artistes like Ustad Zakir Hussain, Salim-Sulaiman, Ustad Fazal Quereshi, Karsh Kale, Deepak Pandit, Ustad Dilshad Khan, Ustad Sabir Khan and Akriti Kakkar. It has been organized by Saptsur Sansthan in association with Pancham Nishad.
The concert has been conceptualized by Khan’s disciple Deepak Pandit along with Om Chhangani of Saptsur Sansthan and Sabir Khan. A similar week long tribute concert was recently held in Jodhpur, the legendary artist’s birthplace, in memory of the renowned musician.
Indian sarangi player and classical vocalist belonging to Indore Gharana, Khan was one of the members of the Indian fusion group Tabla Beat Science, with Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. He gave his first performance at the All-India Conference at the age of eleven, and has performed on an International scale with Ravi Shankar on George Harrison’s 1974 Dark Horse World Tour. He died on 27 November 2011 after a prolonged illness.
The maestro has won numerous musical awards including the Padma Bhushan in 2010, twice the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award also known as the President’s Award, the Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra, the American Academy of Artists Award of Medalist Award of Maharshtra and the American Academy of Artists Award in 1998. He has also received the honour of performing at Prince Charles 50th birthday celebrations in 1997.
He has many popular songs to his credit including ‘Albela Sajan Aayo Re’, ‘Maqbool’, ‘Kachche Dhaage’, ‘Mr and Mrs Iyer’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Agni Varsha’, ‘Superstar’, ‘Rahul’, ‘Paanch’, ‘Mausam’ and more. He also released many successful albums throughout his career like Piya Basanti, Ustad & the Divas, Ustad Sultan Khan & his friends, Shoonya, Bhoomi and Pukaar and more.
