MUMBAI: FIFA World Cup has announced a major three hour concert to kickstart the football event which is scheduled in 2010 in South Africa.
FIFA announced the event on 10 June 2010 which will highlight the “music, sport and visual pageantry of South Africa”, at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.
The event – featuring African superstars and football legends – is the first of its kind and takes place a day before the opening ceremony and first game.
The show is being staged by Kevin Wall who produced events such as Live 8 and Live Earth.
FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said, “This kick-off celebration will be one of the greatest events of its kind in Africa and a must-see for football and music fans around the world.”
Artists performing at the Official Kick-Off Celebration Concert will be announced nearer to the show date.
“We’re really trying to highlight football and the cultures and colour and music of Africa so you will see a lot of great international artists but I can’t comment on who they are,” said Kevin. He further added, “I think this will be one of the greatest shows ever produced from Africa.”
The concert will raise money for the world cup’s official charity 20 Centres for 2010.
