Music Academy announces winners

MUMBAI: Winners of the prestigious Music Academy Awards were announced at the executive committee meeting held in Chennai yesterday. The announcement was made by academy president N Murali.

Eminent vocalist Thrissur V Ramachandran has been chosen for the ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ title by the academy this year. Tiruchi J Venkataraman (vocalist) and T Rukmani (violinist) have been selected for the ‘Sangita Kala Acharya’ awards while Mullapudi Sriramamurthy (mridangist) and K S Raghunathan (musician and recording expert) will be honoured with the ‘TTK award’.

The awards aim to encourage and promote the Indian Carnatic Music art form by recognising and rewarding people who have contributed to the field of Carnatic music over the years.

Other prominent awardees include Ritha Rajan who will be conferred with the ‘Musicologist Award’ and Lalitha Raghavan will be bestowed with the ‘Pappa Venkataramiah Award’.

The awards will be conferred at a ceremony to be held on 1 January, 2013. The celebrations are part of the 86th annual conference of the academy which will be held from 15 December to 1 January. The conference will be presided by Ramachandran.
