MUMBAI: Despite winning the best India Act at the MTV EMAs 2015 amidst competition from other Indian artists like Indus Creed, Monica Dogra, Your Chin and The Ska Vengers, Priyanka Chopra failed to clinch the Best African/ Indian Act title at the awards. The Bollywood actor turned singer lost out to Diamond Platnumz, an African Bongo Flava artist.
However, one of the biggest winners of the night was Justin Bieber, who will soon be releasing his fourth album. The Canadian singer took home a number of awards, including two of the biggest. The ‘Sorry’ singer won Best Male, beating out competition from Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West and Jason Durelo. He also won Best Canadian Act, Best Look, Biggest Fans, Best Collaboration for ‘Where Are U Now’ by Justin Bieber, Skrillex & Diplo, and Best Worldwide Act: North America, for which he was competing against Taylor Swift.
Although Swift was nominated for a whopping nine awards, the singer picked up just two titles- Best Song for ‘Bad Blood’ featuring Kendrick Lamar, and Best US Act, which also included other nominees like Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Nick Jonas and Kendrick Lamar. Minaj, however, took home the Best Hip Hop award, in a category that also included Lamar, Kanye West, Drake and Wiz Khalifa.

One of Swift’s best buds- Ed Sheeran, who co-hosted the award show with ‘Orange Is The New Black’ actor- Ruby Rose, won a couple of awards on the night. The ‘Thinking Out Loud’ singer won Best Live Act where he was pitted against Swift, Katy Perry, Foo Fighters, and Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett. He also won the Best World Stage award for ‘V Festival, Hylands Park, UK 2014’. Unfortunately, the BRIT winner lost out to fellow UK artist- Little Mix, who won Best UK & Ireland Act, in a category that also included Jess Glynne, Years & Years, and One Direction.
Other winners on the night included Rihanna for Best Female, where she competed against Swift, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj and Ellie Goulding. UK boy band- One Direction won against Ariana Grande, Bieber, Swift and 5 Seconds of Summer for the Best Pop title. Coldplay won Best Rock against AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Must and Royal Blood, while Lana Del Ray beat Lorde, Fall Out Boy, Florence + the Machine and Twenty One Pilots to the Best Alternative title.
Dutch DJ/producer Martin Garrix won the Best Electronic award amidst competition from David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Avicii and Major Lazer. Meanwhile, Canadian singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes took home the Best New Act, winning against James Bay, Jess Glynne, Echosmith and Tori Kelly.
English new wave/synthpop band- Duran Duran were presented with the Video Visionary Award at the MTV EMAs.
