MUMBAI: After recognizing and awarding the best in international music, MTV has now extended its Video Music Awards to India by presenting the first edition of the global awards.
The awards will recognize music that is highly popular in young India in 17 categories. The genres of music that will be considered for the awards are Film featuring both Hindi and Regional, and Independent music. The awards will also award the international artist who has had the biggest impact in India along with the artist who ruled the digital space with their music.
Other awards will also include Best Video Director, Best Video Editor and Best Sound Designer. The winners will be decided purely by the audience on the basis of online voting. Any artist who has released music between January-December 2012 is eligible to enter the awards. MTV has also partnered with Micromax for the first edition of the awards.
MTV India EVP and business head Aditya Swamy said, “Bringing the VMAs to India gives us an opportunity to recognize artists who have rocked young India and do it in a unique MTV way that is full of irreverence. Given the wide range of artists we have worked with over the years, it is our way of giving something back to the musicians who have given us such incredible music. Leveraging our huge digital footprint, the entire entry and voting process is online and transparent, which means the voice of the audience will be heard.”
The registration process has commenced on TV and online, and artistes can send in multiple entries. The last date for registration is 13 February 2013. The voting system will be validated by MTV’s adjudicator partner Ernst & Young India and the short listing will be validated by Ormax Media.
