MUMBAI: After Oscar winner A.R. Rahman is presented with an honorary doctorate at Berklee College, Indian bass prodigy Mohini Dey will pay tribute to the maestro, along with the students and faculty of the college.
18 -year -old Dey is delighted with the fact that she will be right besides Rahman when he is honoured for his works. “We (Dey, students and faculty) will be playing his songs but it will be a different interpretation of them.”
Dey has worked with Rahman on Coke Studio Season 3 episode and also performed at a concert with him. “I called him to inform him that I would be playing there, and he was very happy to know that I would be paying tribute to him.” She will perform on 24 October 2014 at Symphony Hall, where the ceremony will be held. Dey will be going to venue after her Chennai gig with musician Prasanna.

She revealed that she was invited by Berklee College of Music for The Five Week Summer Performance Program, but due to her tour with Sivamani, she will join them next year.
Apart from gigs, Dey is busy working on her new instrumental album which will be a collaboration with Ranjit Barot, Louiz Banks, her father Sujoy Dey and her younger sister amongst the others. “The album will be a mix of genres as I am habituated to play with various kinds of musicians.” When quizzed about her young sister, she said, “We are different in our style. She is a lead guitarist and mostly her music is based around ragas. She teaches me Carnatic music and I teach her my style.”
Funk and jazz being her forte, Dey still likes to play fusion and also plays in a way that will suit other genres. “When I started off, it was very difficult for me to perform various genres. Switching between genres was not as smooth as it is today. Now, I can keep in mind the needs of different genres and musicians and play along with it.”
She hinted that there are a few more projects that are in the pipeline and will be out in the next few months.
