MUMBAI: Making Xbox the nexus of household entertainment, Microsoft Corp has unveiled a new software app ‘SmartGlass’ for smartphones and tablets.
The software will allow users to view extra content, control games and surf the Internet from tablets and smartphones. The app will link the console to mobile devices, powered by Windows or Apple Inc’s iOS and Google Inc’s Android. The company has also incorporated voice recognition technology and is in-talks to sell cloud-based music on Apple’s iTunes or Amazon.com Inc. The app enables user to remotely control TV displays and companion content from TV to games on mobile devices.
Microsoft also offered the first look of its ‘Xbox Music’ app, which will be available on Xboxes, Windows Phone and Windows 8 devices. The company stated that Xbox Music will replace their current music streaming service on Xbox, Zune, however, it will be more than a simple revamp of that application. Zune Music customers who created playlists using the old service would still have access to those songs through the new Xbox Music service.
Zune, introduced by Microsoft in 2006, was both a music-playing device like the iPod and iTunes-like service that allows people to load their Zune players with music.
