Mamta Sharma to explore various musical genres

MUMBAI: Mamta Sharma, who made her bollywood debut last year with popular item number ‘Munni Badnaam Hui’ is on a new musical voyage, experimenting with different sounds and music.  After rendering club numbers, the singer is now looking forward to explore other genres in her upcoming projects.

The recently released films ‘Rowdy Rathore’ and ‘Rakhtbeej’ comprise of tracks that reflect her distinguished singing style. “Aa re Pritam Pyaare from Rowdy Rathore is very different from the normal item numbers. It is a very south style dance number with peppy flavour, while Rakhtbeej features a total Indian folk song,” she says.

‘Ab Tak Chappan 2’, ‘Kamaal, Dhammal, Malamaal’, ‘Babuji Ek Ticket Bumbai’ and ‘Zilla Ghaziabad’ are few of her projects for 2012-13.

Munni Badnaam Hui’ won Sharma several awards and rave reviews from audiences and music fraternity. Reminiscing about her journey in Bollywood, the husky-voiced singer states, “I never thought of winning awards when I started off and was very happy when my songs became huge hits. I feel so fortunate to have made a mark in my career at an early stage.”

However, inspite of achieving success at an early stage, Sharma feels that working with big banners and rendering for established actors helps new singers in gaining recognition. “Singing for a big banner makes a lot of difference. Preference is given to popular and established singers over new and young singers as people fear to risk and experiment. Though things are very different now, they were not like this around a year back,” she states.

When quizzed about her musical journey, the vocalist credits her work to the hit composer duo Sajid-Wajid, with whom she has delivered numerous chartbusting club tracks. She asserts, “Sajid-Wajid is a hit machine. They are great composers and always treat their singers with total ease while dubbing. They always listen to your feedback and try to incorporate what you feel into the song.”

Sharma has rendered tracks for various films like ‘Yamla, Pagla, Deewana’, ‘Bin Bulaye Baarati’, ‘Miley na Miley Hum’, ‘Gali Gali Chor Hai’ and ‘Housefull 2’ in her two-year long career. The singer says that singing item numbers is the  toughest amongst all other genres. “A person always has a mellow, romantic and emotional side to their personality, so it is not difficult to sing such songs, but an item track is such which everyone cannot sing. I personally find it difficult as I am not much of a party person, so when I sing these songs I close my eyes and try to imagine how the actress will perform on this track and what she will be feeling at that time.”

A lesser known fact about the singer is that she has also rendered tracks in various regional languages like Tamil, Kannada and Bengali. Sharma states that she likes singing such songs and loves to take up the challenge. “It’s actually not very difficult to render tracks in different languages. Infact I find it a very fun and learning experience. When you are in the studio, the music director and lyricist is always present to make you understand the words. I usually write the meaning of the word in my own language which helps me get the feel of it right.”
