MUMBAI: With a noble aim to raise funds for girls’ education projects, Erotica singer Madonna sold abstract painting by French artist Fernand Leger for more than $7million at a New York City auction. The pop singer aims to raise funds for girls’ education projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.
As per reports, Sotheby’s auction house has not disclosed who bought Leger’s (lay-ZHAYZ’) ‘Three Women at the Red Table’ for $7.2 million on Tuesday. The abstract work had a pre-sale estimate of $5 million to $7 million. In 1921, Leger created the work as part of a series depicting women with still-life compositions.
Madonna said in a statement last month, “I cannot accept a world where women or girls are wounded, shot or killed for either going to school or teaching in girls’ schools. We don’t have time to be complacent.” The 54- year-old singer wanted to ‘trade something valuable for something invaluable’ in countries where female education is rare or nonexistent. She bought the work at Sotheby’s in 1990 for $3.4 million.
