MUMBAI: Lee DeWyze was crowned the winner of the ninth season of American Idol garnering more votes than judges’ favourite Crystal Bowersox.
24 year old paint salesman DeWyze from Illinois walked away with the recording contract prize in a closely fought finale with host Ryan Seacrest revealing that the pair entered the final show with just two per cent of votes dividing them.
Delighted at his win DeWyze said, “I don’t know [what it feels like] this is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything. Thank you, thank you.
DeWyze will now release Beautiful Day as his first single.
The two hour finale saw performances by last year’s winner Kris Allen who sang The Truth, with Michael McDonald, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Hall & Oates and Robin and Barry Gibb.
The show also marked the exit of Idol’s most talked about judge Simon Cowell. Known for giving rash criticisms to aspiring singers, Cowell is leaving ‘American Idol’ to focus on his British talent show ‘The X Factor’, which he will bring to the United States next year.
