MUMBAI: Pune based multi-segment Vishwakarma University, in collaboration with Lakshminarayana Global Centre of Excelence, has a certified course for music designed by the legendary violinist Padmabhushan Dr. L. Subramaniam and his wife and noted playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy.
The three-year-long course is developed by the husband-wife duo given their decade long expertise in training students in music. The course doesn’t limit to training in core music and performance but all the auxiliaries like sound, event management, music technologist to name a few. Dr. L.Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamoorthy, who founded the Dr. L.Subramaniam Academy of Performing Artists in 2007, plan to pass their life experience in music to the students of this course.
The students will be trained in Hindustani, Carnatic and Western music by these maestros and other esteemed resident faculty. This is not it; there will also be legends in music across the world as guest faculty with the course entailing a practical learning base. One of the assignments demarked for the students is being a part of the Lakshminarayana Global Festival, a festival which has featured global legend like Yehudi Menuhin.

Learning fundamentals or advance nuances of music are usually the focus in most of the institutes; however, the art of performance is neglected. Since the main designers of this course are world-class performers and names to reckon with, special attention will be on performance quality.
While Kavita Krishnamurthy and Dr. L Subramaimam are the chief architects of this course and the syllabus, Ruchira Kedar, a well-known classical singer, based in Pune is appointed Head of Department for this faculty. She would also be teaching Hindustani Classical music to the students of this course.
Speaking about the course she says, “Currently, Kavita Krishnamurthy and L Subramaniam are aiming to visit the university once or twice in two months, to begin with, considering their busy schedules. Other than them, we have learned experts for all segments be it Carnatic, Hindustani Classical, and Western Classical for regular classes. The idea is to nurture the generation of musicians.”
The first batch of this course starts this June and has limited seating of only 60 students, as the main belief of this course is the Gurukul system and one on one interaction rather than mass training. While there is no test, screening or auditions to select the students, inclination towards music is mandatory. The course fees are 1.25 lakhs a year that can be paid in installments over the year.
