MUMBAI: Having composed music for movies like ‘Hijack’ and the yet to be released ‘Sikandar’, composer duo Justin-Uday have returned to the Indi-pop genre with Shibani Kashyap’s new album.

The album will have six tracks which are penned by Prashant Ingole and Rahul Seth. “We did not want to stick to any particular genre. The sound ranges from Arabaic, Hip-hop and even Salsa,” informs Justin. “We wanted to change the perception that Shibani can sing only in one particular style. Hence we have given her a mix of genre to prove her versatility,” says Uday.

“We have earlier composed for Sharon Prabhakar’s album in 1996 but after the remix era settled in we refused to compose such mediocre music and got busy composing for ads and jingles,” says Justin. The duo have more than 500 jingles to its credit.

Says Justin, “The pop market was dead because of the confusion and chaos that the remixes caused five years ago. There were some music labels who were throwing artistes like waste. People lost interest in the genre. Even today there is a huge void which needs to be filled. Listeners are matured and will listen to any genre of music if it is at par with what is already being offered to them.

Indi-pop today is competing with film music so it has to offer varied music. Sticking to one genre will prove detrimental for it.”

The duo also have a band named ‘The Fuzitives’. “Currently we are working on the content that the band will play. Once that is in place we will then tour around the country and even abroad,” informs Justin. Apart from Mumbai the band will play in cities like Pune, Delhi, Bangalore and even in Canada. “After our first round of performances which should happen in next six months, we will also launch an album.”

Speaking on the issue of plagiarism of tunes, Justin says, “Even earlier the musicians use to lift and copy tunes but then it wasn’t brought under the light of the day. Today due to exposure via internet it is easier to track the copied tunes.” He further adds, “It is because the producers and directors are least bothered that few musicians are resorting to such cheap gimmicks. Our copyright laws are not in place otherwise such issues would be under check.”

Says Uday, “People who have talent shouldn’t waste it on copying others tunes. They should rather spend the energy on composing something original.”

The duo’s future projects include Kunal Shivdasani’s next untitled project and another film titled ‘Kabhi Aage Kabhi Peeche’.
