MUMBAI: After making waves with their hit tracks across the globe, rappers Jay Z and Kayne West have now made it within the top five of the 25 Most Powerful People in Rap list compiled by Complex magazine.
Leading the list are Bryan Birdman and Ronald Slim Williams, co-founders of the Cash Money Records Group, whose roster includes artistes like Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake amongst others.
Renowned rapper Jay Z came in second for starting his label Roc Nation and selling over 50 million albums worldwide. The label’s repertoire includes J Cole and Wale, while his management company handles artistes Rihanna, Shakira and Kylie Minogue.
The president of Def Jam Recordings Joie IE Manda bagged the third spot on the list. The record label has recently attained success with Nas, 2 Chainz and Frank Ocean. Emerging as one of the most sought after entrepreneurs, music producer Jimmy Iovine and rapper Dr Dre came in at fourth for running Interscope records, launching their Beats headphones range and founding Aftermath Entertainment.
Rounding off the top five on the list was Kayne West for making a successful career as a rapper and founding his own label GOOD Music, which includes Big Sean, Pusha T and Kid Cudi.
Others who made it on the top 10 included, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs at sixth for Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group. Coming in at seventh spot was the president of A&R, Warner Music Group Mike Caren and the president of Black Music, Atlantic Records Michael Kyser.
The eighth spot was dominated by Warner/Chappell Music president of creative Big’ Jon Platt, while Eminem’s manager Paul Rosenberg was placed ninth for his work in Shady Records and Goliath Artists Management. Currently unemployed, the former CEO of Recorded Music for Warner Music Group, Lyor Cohen came in at the tenth position on the power list.
