MUMBAI: The Rajya Sabha will find representatives from the music field as among those just nominated include lyricist Javed Akhtar, music exponent Ram Dayal Munda, economist and educationist Bhalchandra Mungekar and theatre personality B Jayashree.
President Pratibha Patil nominated five people to the Rajya Sabha for their expertise in specific fields of art, literature, science, and social services on March 19, 2010. According to the constitution, the president has the power to nominate as many as twelve people to the Upper House for their expertise in various fields.
Javed Akhtar has been one of bollywood’s senior most lyricists, and was conferred with Padma Bhushan (2007) and Padma Shri (1999). Intrestingly, Javed Akhtar’s wife, actress Shabana Azmi has also been a Rajya Sabha member from 1997 to 2003
