MUMBAI: Singer Jashan Bhumkar dwells into his “unmatched joy” musical venture on account of World Music Day.
During an exclusive interview with Radioandmusic, “Bhay Ithale Sampat Nahi” singer unveils his latest project that aims to revive the Natyasangeet tradition of Maharashtra. He also added that his musical journey is filled with learning, discovery, growth and unmatched joy.

On the occasion of world music day, tell us how has your musical journey been until now?
While any musical journey is far from easy, I would say it has been a wonderful process. I started rigorous pursuit of Hindustani classical music at the age of 5. The journey in music is endless, and lifelong! For example, each time even now when I sing a raga that I learnt years ago, I discover a completely new shade or dimension to it that I was unaware of all this while! Along the way I also got exposed to various other forms of music, including ghazal, devotional, semi-classical and in recent times, even pop. I’m grateful to God and my Gurus that today I’m equally known for these genres as I am for my classical renditions. All in all, it has been a journey filled with learning, discovery, growth and unmatched joy, and I look forward to what’s there to come next!
When did you realize you will be taking up music as a career or Who was your inspiration back than ?
I have always had two clear aims when it comes to my music – firstly, the pursuit of musical excellence and to never settle for anything but my very best in terms of my hard work. Secondly, I’m deeply passionate about the original music of India, and making it renewed and relevant in today’s time especially to my generation. By combining these two factors, I would say somewhere the career started to build by itself!
The turning point when I decided to go all in and give music my all was in my teenage years, the first time Gaansaraswati Kishori Amonkar live. Even today I get goosebumps when I shut my eyes and think of that concert which is so deeply etched in my memory. Of course, later on, I had the fortune to train under and even years after she has passed away she continues to be my inspiration and guiding light.
What are your plans to celebrate World music day?
Well, music really gives us something to celebrate every day! I am right now involved in a project that aims to revive the Natyasangeet tradition of Maharashtra, so that gives me a lot of exciting pieces to work on. It’s also raining a lot in Mumbai now making the weather perfect to inspire some new monsoon melodies which also I’ve been working on. So my plan for the day would be to make progress on these projects and bring them forth to audiences as soon and as nicely as possible!
Who is that one artist you wish to collaborate with?
There is so much talent out there and all of it is so inspiring. It is very hard to pick a few, but let me try. On the international front Id love to collaborate with Charlie Puth who I find absolutely pitch perfect. And closer to home, I’ve always loved Shreya Ghoshal’s music – I’m sure if I do end up singing with her some day, I’d stop halfway through the rendition and just stay silent listening to her beautiful voice! Another secret wish of mine is to collaborate with someone in the super-pop space, like Neha Kakkar, and to sing something in a genre and style that’s totally unexpected of me!
