MUMBAI: Iconic ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas hopes that his work-in-progress memior provides an inspiration for young and upcoming artists to strive hard and never give up. The yet untitled book is expected to launch in the later part of 2013.
Udhas, who recently started penning about his life and experiences, told Radioandmusic.com (RnM) that he was not looking to write a ‘good’ book but an honest book that would come as a guide and a reference for young singers.
“I had no god fathers. Whatever I have achieved is through hard work and focus. The issue is not so much about achieving success but sustenance. It is more important to look for maintaining one’s standards than trying to achieve success. This is important for young people who are trying to make a career out of singing,” he said.

“Compared to the yesteryears, today the competition is fierce and changes are rapid. I would be a hypocrite if I say that things don’t change. Even the Bhagvad Gita said change is constant. Even I have undergone changes, I have grown but the changes have not been so rapid (as it is now)”.
Technology has hastened the pace of change and it is with qualities like dedication that artists can stay in competition.
Udhas highlighted that his main motivation was to document his 35 year long career in the music industry and his journey towards becoming the country’s premier Ghazal singer.
“I had been toying with the idea of writing and have met a couple of publishers and everyone has shown interest. I wanted to write a comprehensive account starting from my childhood to growing up. I had thought of naming my book ‘Sounds of Silence’ but it was already taken. I haven’t thought of a new name,” he added.
