MUMBAI: Controversial rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh who had been accused of singing vulgar lyrics for ‘Main Hoon Balatkari’ (I am a rapist) that went viral has raged the High Court. Now, the Punjab and Haryana High Court have ordered the Punjab government to take action against rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh for singing such ‘vulgar song’.
The court has directed the Punjab government that such singers should be boycotted from the society. The rapper was not present in the court despite the notice issued to him on an earlier date of hearing.
Radioandmusic.com speaks to few musicians and singers who have worked closely with him and some who are completely unaware of Singh’s ways and styles.
Fame came to Sukhwinder Singh with his track ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ and he continues to deliver some exciting music matching the tunes of new age music. He expresses his views about Singh, “I have never heard his tracks but I know that he sings funny. I am aware that there is freedom of expression but in the name of freedom one cannot slap people.”
Rabbi Shergill who hit the chord among the audience with his debut album ‘Rabbi’ and is referred as Punjabi music’s true urban balladeer also shares, “We are privileged group as we have the gift to express our views through music and we should see to it that we are careful in what we do and how we do it. Demeaning women does not go along with the modern day Indian prospective. Other artistes and Honey Singh should understand that there are no short-cuts to success and that they should be responsible when they express.”
Meet Brothers who have composed some energetic tracks for films like Shootout at Wadala and 2013 Zanjeer also deliver tracks-based on the trend of Bollywood industry. Harmeet says, “If the lyrics are offensive one should have a penalty and not penalize every now and then. He is a talented singer. I love and respect him for his work and the way he took the industry by his mere talent. Having said that I also believe that penalty on heavy offensive words should also be given.”
At an earlier hearing, judges criticised Honey Singh for singing shameful songs which were disrespectful to women and now this comment of boycott displays the strong view of the court.
Singh has been quiet about the whole issue for a while. But he had been displaying his view through various outlets like a video ‘Bring Me Back’ featuring Yo Yo Honey Singh shows the impact the criticism has bought in his life.
