Hariharan to host tribute concert for Mehdi Hassan

MUMBAI: Hariharan will pay tribute to late ghazal king Mehdi Hassan in a special concert titled ‘Abke Hum Bichade’. The concert will be held tomorrow at Ravindra Natya Mandir in Mumbai.

The singer will perform on some of the legend’s classic ghazals like ‘Abke Hum Bichade’, ‘Dekh Toh Dil Ki Jaan Se Uthtaa Hai’, ‘Mohabbat Karne Waale Kam Na Honge’ and ‘Ranjish Hi Sahi Dil Hi Dukhaane Ke Liye Aa’ amongst others. The performance will culminate with a screening of Hassan’s unseen footage, collated by the veteran’s family. The concert will be followed by 11th Khazana festival, two-day music and poetry event featuring leading contemporary voices from the ghazal world.

Eminent artistes of classical music including Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Javed Akhtar and Roop Kumar Rathod are expected to attend the concert, organised by Banyan Tree Events.

Hariharan said, “My most beautiful memory of Khan Sahab was when he had come down with his son for my 50th birthday. Mehdi sahab’s compositions may sound easy on the ear because of the effortlessness of his rendition, but once you try to sing the same, you realize how challenging it can be. I can only make my most sincere effort. It is up to the audience to decide.”
