MUMBAI: It’s never an easy task for an artiste to change tracks, and upcoming composer-producer in the Hindi music genre, Harpreet Singh who makes his debut as music director can attest to that. Not exactly a segment he had treaded on, Harpeet could not resist the challenge to take up a surprise offer to helm the music for the soon to be released ‘Baat Bann Gayi’ (directed by debutant Shuja Ali).
“It was a very challenging project for me. Firstly, I compose and produce for album (‘Mehram, ‘Tere Rehmat’) where the way one thinks is completely different. When I was approached for the film and later learning that it was a comedy, I was staggered,” Singh told Radioandmusic.com at the launch of the film’s music.
Fortunately for him, director Ali is a lover of poetry and Sufi music and gave Singh a free hand to work on the rom-com. With the space opened to him, Singh got to try out different genres of music- Sufi infused from ballads to Punjabi-club sounds that carried his trademark strength for melody. The end result has a family oriented rom-com with six songs covering various genres. Highlights include a ballad by Sonu Nigam and a ‘male’ item song by Javed Ali- a regular of Singh’s projects.

“Despite my initial hesitation, the work turned out to be a piece of cake. All my options were approved and romance and Sufi music are my favourite genres of music,” Singh pointed out.
Baat Bann Gayi may not boast of big names- its cast includes newcomers British-Indian actress Anisa, Ali Fazal, actress and TV personality Amrita Raichand with veteran baddie Gulshan Grover (in a comic double role) rounding it off- but the Singh and the team is confident the film will shake the box office when it’s released on 11 October thanks to its script and music.
“ What convinced me about the project was the script- it’s a funny and decent film and the freedom and brief that allowed me to create the music for the scenes and include Sufi music which I love,” he said signing off.
