MUMBAI: It seems like the British ace guitarist Guthrie Govan cannot have enough of India. Over two months after concluding the India tour with his three-piece progressive rock outfit The Aristocrats, Guthrie Govan announced through his official Facebook page that his upcoming visit to India will include holding clinics and live shows with an Indian band.
Assisting Govan on his second visit to the country in five months will be renowned drummer Gino Banks and one of the most promising young talents and bassist Mohini Dey. The nature of Govan’s upcoming visit – in February – would differ to The Aristocrats’ outing, as the 45-year-old (who turns 46 on December 27) will hold multiple clinics for aspiring guitarists from the country. Live shows with Banks and Dey will follow.
Drummer Gino Banks, also son of legendary jazz composer Louis Banks, confirmed the news and added, “When The Aristocrats came down to India, Guthrie informed about his desire to return to the country. He had a free schedule in February, and now, he has made it official.” Banks and Govan had collaborated before for a live performance five years ago, and understandably, shares an unique camaraderie with the Essex-born musician. “Right now, the news is out. He’d be expecting for promoters and organisers to approach his team and execute the plans laid out,” informed Banks.

Ideally, a Guthrie Govan ‘clinic + show’ concept begins with the clinic and workshop, followed with the show on the next day. But Banks could not confirm the nature of Govan’s 2017 India visit. “He is open to playing anywhere. It could be a group workshop or even a solo one, too early to tell,” answered Banks, when asked if he’d be a part of the clinic too.
Guthrie Govan-led The Aristocrats performed for at least 1000 fans at The Humming Tree, Bengaluru (the last leg of the tour), officially making it the most sold-out The Aristocrats gig ever. One can definitely understand why Govan looks forward to perform in India for the second time in six months, an unlikely possibility concerning any overseas popular musician.
Delhi-based agency ‘Up Your Arts’ will handle the bookings for Govan’s upcoming visit.
