DJ/Producer GURBAX, recognized for being at the forefront of the bass music movement in India with hit releases like ‘Boom Shankar’ and ‘Aghori’, released yet another banger of a release. titled ‘Dirty South’, the track sees the 28-year-old collaborating with acclaimed California-based world/experimental music act, Beats Antique for the very first time.
The track serves as a homage to the cultures that contributed to GURBAX’s creative inspiration and molding, with Beats Antique, an ethnotronica group that blends electronic music with various genres of world music, infusing emotive depth into the sonic texturing through the violin and live drums.

Could you tell us about your new music release?
A constant theme in my music has been to attempt a perfect intersection between the two cultures that have impacted my life the most – Indian and American. Growing up in both places meant my music had undeniably become this mutant love-child of the East and the West. However, up until this point, I had never actually attempted to combine the cultures of the specific cities that influenced me the most, namely – Bengaluru and Atlanta. ‘Dirty South’ attempts to do just that. It draws inspiration from the instrumentation, rhythms, and musical motifs that are signature to both cities – coincidentally both situated in the South of their respective countries – and combining them in a way that’s totally refreshing and unique.
Could you explain the process of the song, how was your experience?
The entire process of working on this track has been extra special to me cause of the opportunity to collaborate with Beats Antique whom I’ve idolized for over 10 years now (before I even started producing music). Back in my college days, I’d been to multiple of their concerts just a fan so it was quite an unreal experience to have them invite me into their studio & agree to work with me on this!

How are you spending your quarantine time? What are you doing apart from music?
Definitely exercise. I try to get a workout at least every other day. Also really enjoy listening to podcasts.
Upcoming plans and collaborations?
I’ve got three different tracks coming up with Punjabi vocals on ‘em so that’s definitely a new direction for me.
Tell us about the digital festivals you would be performing for? Concept etc.
I’m playing one called 5x Fest soon which is a festival based in Vancouver, Canada that promotes South Asian culture run by some really good people who’ve become friends over the years. I flew there last year to play it, however, due to the pandemic they’re going digital this year. Nevertheless, I’ve recorded an extremely special set, which was shot at an iconic location here in Bengaluru & will be sharing details on it very soon.
Could you tell us about your EP which is in the process?
I’ve got a few singles coming out later in the year and then an EP, which will mark a slight shift in my sound. Also going to be releasing a music video out for Dirty South.
GURBAX was the first Indian trap artist to debut at the psychedelic playground ‘The Mushroom’ at the virtual edition of the revered annual weeklong desert gathering, ‘Burning Man’ which was scheduled to run from August 30th to September 6th this year.
