MUMBAI: Indian musicians Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain’s fusion band ‘Shakti’ clinched the Grammy Award for ‘Best Global Music Album’ on Monday, celebrating their latest creation, ‘This Moment.’ In an image shared by the Grammys on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, Mahadevan and fellow band member Ganesh Rajagopalan are captured receiving the award on stage.
The Grammy’s post read, “Congrats Best Global Music Album winner – ‘This Moment’ Shakti. #GRAMMYs.” During his acceptance speech, Mahadevan expressed gratitude, stating, “Thank you boys. Thank you God, family, friends, and India. India, we are proud of you… Last but not least, I would like to dedicate this award to my wife, whom every note of my music is dedicated to.”

Released on June 30 last year, the album ‘This Moment’ comprises eight songs crafted by John McLaughlin (guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).
The Grammy nomination placed them alongside artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido. Notably, Zakir Hussain also secured the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ Grammy for his contribution to ‘Pashto’ alongside Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, featuring Rakesh Chaurasia, a virtuoso flute player.
In an exceptional feat, Hussain bagged three Grammys in one night, while Chaurasia received two awards. The 66th annual Grammy Awards 2024 are taking place in Los Angeles.
