Fourteen years later: Reinventing herself – major factor in Shreya Ghoshal’s consistency

MUMBAI: To cement an equally respectable position in the mainstream film and non-film spaces requires consistency over the years, and Shreya Ghoshal has successfully understood and mastered the same for almost two decades now. The music director’s playback-singer celebrates fourteen years in the Bollywood industry, and here are few of the Ghoshal beauts that has gradually and effectively made her omnipresent when it comes to Bollywood music.

To talk about Ghoshal without mentioning her first success story in Bollywood would be unfair. Ghoshal recorded ‘Bairi Piya’, the song from 2002-release ‘Devdas’, in a single take and the then-sixteen year old’s effort was received with much delight and surprise from the established movie personalities involved in the project.

She won the National Film Award for Best Playback Singer Female for the song

The success of the movie, apart from the strong cast of the movie ensured Ghoshal’s voice reached millions of homes, but the association with poorer projects and critically failed movies did not stop Ghoshal’s journey to fame.

Here’s a song from ‘Desh Devi’ involving music director Ismail Darbar

She won her last Filmfare award in 2016 for Bajirao Mastan’s ‘Deewani Mastani’

Ghoshal’s versatility did not restrict to devotional, pop or typical mainstream compositions. The song ‘Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai’ from Jism exactly proved that.

One of the few commercially popular singers who never shook hands with controversies

It was her first collaboration with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy that got the tabloids talking, thus realising that the singer surely has arrived, and would continue to dominate for longer period. The female version of ‘Tu Hi Bata Zindagi’

Ghoshal’s most elaborate effort occurred through Nadeem-Shravan’s album for the movie ‘Tumsa Nahi Dekha: A Love Story’, where the singer lent her vocals for all the songs, except one.

Her last such grand effort arrived in the form of solo albums

Usha Uthup called her as ‘Voice of the Future’, director Vidhu Vinod Chopra mentioned her as ‘the best singer in the industry’, and the immense singing ability despite the complications involved in ‘Banarasiya’ from Raanjhana provides justice to the tags.

She has sung for AR Rahman’s composition, but it’s her voice for Ilaiyaraaja’s ‘Ki & Ka’ single titled ‘Foolishq’ sung with Armaan Malik proves how Ghoshal manages to reinvent herself over and over again. Everyone knows singing for Ilaiyaraaja’s composition involves intense precision, and Ghoshal is a queen.

Ghoshal has gradually created an impression In the industry (the four National Awards and six Filmfare Awards speak for itself), but the best compliment one could provide to Ghoshal would be the fact that her best is yet to come.
