MUMBAI: In a dramatic turn of events, an FIR has been lodged against Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager of the 4th North East India Festival, at Morigaon Police Station. The complaint, filed by advocate Ratul Borah, accuses Mahanta of foul play in the untimely death of Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg, who passed away in a scuba diving accident in Singapore on Thursday, September 19.
Borah has alleged that Mahanta’s decision to involve Garg in what he described as a “poorly managed event” amounted to criminal negligence. The FIR claims that Mahanta’s alleged recklessness and lack of responsibility created circumstances that ultimately led to the tragedy.
Meanwhile, unverified reports suggest that Garg attended a party in Singapore on Friday afternoon, a day before his scheduled performance at the festival. According to News18, he went swimming without a life jacket and is believed to have suffered a heart attack. Though rushed to Singapore General Hospital, doctors were unable to save him. His body remains in Singapore for a post-mortem examination and is expected to be flown to Assam on Saturday for funeral rites.
Following the tragedy, the 4th North East India Festival has been canceled. In an official statement, the organizers said, “In light of this tragedy, we are canceling the event. We are devastated and pray for the departed soul of Zubeen Garg. Om Shanti.”
The 52-year-old singer’s sudden demise has plunged Assam and the wider music fraternity into mourning, while questions continue to mount over the circumstances surrounding his death.
