Think psychedelic music and the first thought that comes to mind is an artist on his computer feeding electronic pulse and tones through loops with a base rhythm that seem to amalgamate into an electronic language that lifts your spirits high. Such was the atmosphere as the crowds began to build during the initial hour with opening DJs on the scene at Infected Mushroom’s Mumbai gig on Friday night.
With an apt setup which boasted ample UV lighting with the quintessential white drapery and screens with distorted images, the stage was set for something truly spectacular. As the main console was lit, the crowd burst into a much expected roar. Tommy Cunningham (guitarist) was the first on stage pacing around with his final preparations. In the midst of all that excitement it began, slow rolling beats progressing into the realm of echoes with a hint of treble, just an icebreaker before the guitar was pulled through one of its infamous riffs accompanied by the drums. Welcome Infected Mushrooms! A visual feast erupts with Duvdev center stage, holding a microphone in one hand and a mallet in the other, Tommy on the electric guitar, Rogerio Jardim on the drums and Erez on his Keyboards. As the guitar pulled massive riffs through the intro, the crowd seemed to transcend between a rock show and a trance night, truly psychedelic.
With an extravagant entrance and the crowds on Cloud 9 (literally) Infected didn’t wait much longer before they unleashed all that they had on the ever so anxious audience. With the single Cities of the Future Duvdev was spelling out a good time as he covered the lyrics and aligned the audience’s rhythm with the mallet swaying from left to right, an electronic pied piper to say the least. As the night matured, crowds didn’t seem to stop pooling in and the venue was up to capacity in no time. With many of their all time favorites like Deeply Disturbed, Becoming Insane, I’m the Supervisor, Infected Mushroom was a rave amongst the audience. Playing around with the global music essence, they enthralled the crowds with a sampling of all they had to offer including delectable Jamaican beats in Muse Breaks.

Since it was an indoor performance, the sound was a bit of an issue on account of substandard acoustics. An outdoor venue would have done better justice to the band. However keeping in mind the rules and regulations as far as timing and other constraints go, it was the best arrangement possible.
With the complex and extravagant styles that Infected Mushroom has incorporated, they succeeded in manifesting a truly soulful and at the same time, exhorbitantly energetic night for all the chosen ones who made it.
