MUMBAI: The first ever BBC Music Awards saw Pharrell Williams take home two of the four awards, for ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘International Artist of the Year’. The BBC Music Award for British Artist of the Year was given to multiple Grammy Awards nominee Ed Sheeran.
British radio and television voice-over artiste Fearne Cotton presented the BBC Introducing Award to Welsh rock band- Catfish and the Bottlemen. Their debut studio album ‘The Balcony’ was released in September this year in the UK, and is scheduled to release in the US in 2015.
Despite having just four award categories, The BBC Music Awards did make up for with several powerful and memorable performances by Coldplay, Ella Henderson, Labrinth, Clean Bandit, One Direction, George Ezra, Take That and Calvin Harris via satellite.
“I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who bought a record, bought a ticket, streamed on YouTube or listened to my music,” said Sheeran accepting his British Artist of the Year award from Sir Tom Jones. When asked by Cotton, who hosted the event alongside Radio 2’s Chris Evans, what Sheeran’s highlight of 2014 was, he replied, “I always thought my career would stop at one album, so knowing that my career will be longer than (that) is the highlight for me.”
“I really love my job. I do not want it to end and even if people stop listening to the music, I am still going to make it,” the 23-year-old went on to say.
Pharrell Williams was unable to attend the show due to his filming commitments for The Voice, though he accepted the prize from his Voice co-star Gwen Stefani in a satellite link. He thanked BBC Radio and TV outlets for their support as well as “the countless amazing English fans that have lifted my life to unimaginable heights.”
