American singer-songwriter/producer Pharrell Williams has hit the industry with a brand new music video, this time, featuring trouble-child Miley Cyrus. The music video for ‘Come Get it Bae’, released on 23 July, is his third single from the ‘Happy’ singer’s second studio album ‘GIRL’ which was released on 3 March.
The video begins with a message ‘Beauty has no Expiration Date’ and goes on to show models dancing while Pharrell sits behind the lens. The video concept is quite simple, models pretending to gyrate on and ride a motorcycle (You wanna ride it, my motorcycle), a very obvious sexual innuendo while dancing in front of mirrors. It is a funk song, extremely cheery, which at this point has become Pharrell’s trademark. It has playful beats, with a fusion of well incorporated strong bass and rhythmic hand-claps.
The song is upbeat, with similarities to his previous hit song ‘Happy’, and convinces the listeners to bust into a move. Although, it loses some of its fast paced beats for a few seconds when Cyrus belts the pre-chorus, dancing in front of the camera joined by Pharrell. Featuring the pop star, Cyrus, does not really add anything substantial to the song. The highly catchy chorus is definitely the highlight of the track and is sure to get stuck in the listener’s head after one listen.
‘Bae’ is an acronym for ‘Before Anyone Else’, used often as a term of endearment to someone’s beau, as defined in Urban Dictionary. Through this song, the rapper wants to ensure that everyone thinks of him ‘before anyone else’ or every time someone hears ‘Bae’.
Like most of Pharrell’s music, ‘Come Get It Bae’ is also a celebration of sorts that is soon to become a favourite in the ‘partying scene’. The video is homage to George Michael’s ‘Too Funky’ albeit a weak one, lacking on the glamourous aspect.
Within two days of its release on Pharrell’s official Vevo channel on YouTube, the video has received almost six million views. The song has now reached number 58 on the US Bilboard Hot 100 chart and has sold almost 115,000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen Soundscan.
