MUMBAI: Finally, Rathinam Group of Educational Institutions kick starts its on-campus community radio (CR) station- Rathinavani 90.8 in Coimbatore. District Collector M Karunagaran had inaugurated the station recently.
Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, Rathinam College of Arts and Science department of Visual Communication head A C Prabhu said, “We had applied for the radio station three years back and finally we have received the permission to carry on with the community radio stations. I and Madan A Sendhil had initiated the need for community radio station in the university. I hope that government speeds up the process to set-up community stations so that many institutions get encouraged to start-up community stations. ”
Rathinavani 90.8 will air 80 per cent content in Tamil and 20 per cent will be aired on other languages on- demand basis. Rathinavani 90.8 will broadcast programmes on education, environment, health, art and culture, entrepreneurship and infotainment.
The station’s operation head Nadesan Bala whose extensive experience includes stints at All India Radio (AIR), Surya FM and Radio City, will be to develop content for the Rathinavani. Bala said, “We plan to spread and promote our station through students. We are currently airing promos of the station so we will have some well developed content as we are working on it.”
The content and programmes will be developed by the students and faculty of journalism and communication. “This will be an opportunity for our students to get their first-hand experience which will help them in their careers further,” Prabhu said.
Prabhu further added, “We are looking at getting some local advertisers on-board. But the commercials that we will run will be strongly according to the code of conduct put forth by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.”
