MUMBAI: Some of the most experienced musicians from the classical scene plan to come together on 13 June at Mumbai’s Rangsharda for an experimental concert themed on the amalgamation of lights and colours.
The band that is behind the venture is Vibgyor – a brain child of Ratish, an eminent violinist. The band features virtuosuo musicians like tabla meastro Pt. Vijay Ghate, flautist Rakesh Chaurasia, Sufi Vocalist Runa Rizvi, Drummer Mukul Deore, Singer Rahul Deshpande (grandson of the legendary Pt. Vasantrao Deshpande) and Keyboard player Atul Raninga.
Vibgyor is said to be India’s first colour-based musical fusion band and none of the musicians playing for the band have ever tried something like this, says Rakesh Chaurasia, “All the musicians in the band are having great solo careers and doing exceptionally well in their respective areas, this is just a small experiment which we wanted to try – lets see what the audience reaction is and then we’ll see how to take it forward.”
The band just finished a rehearsing session and plans to have one more before the actual concert, “we are planning one more rehearsing session on 11 June – it will also be a session for the light controllers since they will be playing a big role in this,” he says. This concert will be without any intermissions
All the members of Vibgyor are given colours associated with the seven chakras that exist in the human body. The musicians would try to bring out the moods of these colours with various Raagas. All the musicians would be seen dressed in white so the listeners can have the most of this Audio-Visual treat in the making
Though Chaurasia didn’t reveal the kind of music they would be playing, he did say that they plan to have a jugalbandi towards the end signifying the coming together of all the different colours. “Right now We are just figuring out how much time each one of us would be using for our improvisations – it has to be balanced,” he said before signing off.
Catch the concert on June 13 at Rangsharda, Bandra (w) at 5:30 pm. Entry Rs 500, Rs 300 and Rs 200.
