MUMBAI: Jazz music, which has got the world tuned to it, is not foreign to Indian musicians. The Indian scene of Jazz has been growing with many artists and bands coming up with their jazz creations. So, on the occasion of International Jazz Day, let’s celebrate the Indian jazz artists and their creations.
Rafiq Bhatia and his Breaking English
Rafiq Bhatia is a New York-based Indian-American composer, who has recently grabbed eyeballs with his new album, Breaking English. His eclectic collection is actually an experimental electronica. He has processed as well as paired various sounds and instruments to create a range of anxieties.

Tushar Lal and The Indian Jam Project
Young producer as well as a composer has found The Indian Jam Project, a fusion platform. He is the brainchild behind the composition and arrangement of the Indianised adaptations, which he does usually by bombing them with his own compositions. Through his project, Tushar is attempting to knit classical Indian tones into the script of western music to showcase the beauty of Indian Music. Benedict Lazarus is a renowned jazz guitarist, who has found the jazz band, Benny and The Jazz Collective. It is a Latin and Jazz fusion band from Delhi. He has earlier performed with well known Indian and International Jazz musicians like Bill Wurtzel, Pettre Wettre, Mouzin Menezes, Braz Gonzalvez, Louis Banks etc. Apart from the standard music, the band also plays their own compositions.
Funky Jazz by Kevin D’Cousta
Kevin D’cousta is an Indian Jazz musician, arranger as well as a songwriter, who is inspired by jazz artists like Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey etc.
Bijayashree Samal and Nandighosha
Nandighosha is Bijayashree Samal’s newly formed Indian Spiced Jazz and World Music Group. She is a Hindustani classical vocalist, songwriter, composer and an All India Radio artist, Nandighosha stands for – Joy of Music and defines the groups aim to cream world music to reach beyond borders by mixing of different genres. All compositions are by Bijayashree Samal and her band mate, Bruno Steffen. Their aim is to infuse the colours of jazz music on Indian tunes.
Ashwin Batish and East Meets West Fusion
Ashwin Batish is a renowned sitar and tabla player, who has done various fusion compositions, with jazz being one. This video is from one of his live concerts at Kuumbwa Jazz Center Santa Cruz California playing Casbah Shuffle Sitar in Raga Bhairav.
