MUMBAI: Legendary U.S. singer-songwriter and pianist Billy Joel announced on Friday that he is canceling all upcoming concert performances following a recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a neurological condition affecting the brain.
The 76-year-old musician is currently undergoing physical therapy and has been advised by doctors to avoid performing while he recovers. In a statement shared on social media, Joel expressed his regret, saying, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”
According to the statement, the condition was worsened by recent performances, leading to complications with Joel’s hearing, vision, and balance.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus typically affects individuals over the age of 65 and results from a buildup of fluid in the brain, which exerts pressure on surrounding tissues. The Cleveland Clinic notes that the symptoms often mimic dementia but can be treated and, in some cases, reversed.
Joel’s tour—which was originally scheduled to begin in February with stops across the United States, Canada, and England—had already been postponed to July due to a previously undisclosed medical issue. With this latest announcement, all shows have now been officially canceled.
