MUMBAI: Responding to the shift in music consumption by users, Billboard has launched an on-demand songs chart taking into account online music streaming services like Spotify and Rhapsody.
The music magazine will now take into account data from music streaming sites, in addition to radio airplay ratings and digital song sales. The new chart will rank songs according to the number of times they were heard on six internet services – Spotify, Rhapsody, Mog, Slacker, Muve Music and Rdio. The data will then be featured into the chart along with tallies of streams from sites like Yahoo, Myspace, Guvera and Akoo.
Billboard editorial director Bill Werde said, “It’s so important that we are vigilant in recognizing a changing marketplace almost constantly these days. When you look at these streaming subscription services, you really see how they have come of age and I just think the time is now to do this.”
Topping the on-demand charts this week was the track ‘We Are Young’ by Fun feat Janelle Monae with a total of 1.1 million streams. The top five included ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ by Gotye feat Kimbra, ‘Rack City’ by Tyga, ‘N as In Paris’ by Jay-Z & Kanye West and ‘Take Care’ by Drake feat Rihanna.
