MUMBAI: Singer Anup Jalota known for his inclination towards bhajan and classical singing is all set to promote the two on national television. As reported in the media Jalota along with Baba Ramdev will be producing a singing reality show that will give a platform to singers passionate for bhajan. There will be no Bollywood music unlike most singing reality shows on Indian television.

In a candid chat with Radioandmusic.com Jalota talks about his upcoming reality show ‘Bhajan Ratna’, the importance of being a classically trained singer and the key to longevity in the music industry.

Bhajan Samrat Anup Jalota says that it is a challenge to attract youth to bhajan and classical music, but he is of the firm belief that one should connect with their roots if they want to sustain in the business longer. In fact, the core motto of creating ‘Bhajan Ratna’ is to attract the younger generation towards bhajan.

The attempt seems to have worked as Jalota’s reality show has witnessed and overwhelming auditions round response. Out of these 325 will be selected, but only four will take back home the ‘Bhajan Ratna’ award. “Bhajans have always been around, it is time to make them glamorous, to attract the new generation,” said the singer.

He further added, “This show will definitely attract youth because the standard of this show is on par with reality shows like ‘Indian Idol’. ‘Bhajan Ratna’ will give you the feel of one of the biggest reality shows.”

The show is set to be grand with 100 boys and 100 girls being on the orchestra to support these singers. Apart from this, the reality property will air on seven to eight TV channels according to Jalota.

Furthermore, the Padma Shree awardee who practices music every day till date stated that practice is important for musical survival. “I am in this industry since 40 years and I have seen 40 singers come and go. This is because they lacked practice. The time span of artiste today is decreasing because they do not give time to art.”

Jalota appreciates the work that current lot of artistes are doing but he also believes that the modern technology is hampering the quality of music. The music today is nothing like the golden days of music. “To know the ability of a singer, the music should have some pain. This is not happening nowadays machines are correcting everything. Thus, there is a difference between the singing pattern,” he said.

“The music industry is declining somewhere. The process of music composition has become more saturated. A composer/music director should show ability by doing something different from the others, but that is not happening,” ended the Bhajan Samrat.
