MUMBAI: Legendary actress-singer Barbra Streisand will perform at the 85th Academy Awards on 24 February. It will be the second time that the two-time Academy award winning actress will perform at the Awards, after a gap of 36 years.
Streisand sang at the Academy in 1977 when she won an Oscar for best original song for ‘Evergreen’ in 1977 and also sang the theme from ‘A Star Is Born’ in the same night.
She had earlier won an Oscar for Best Actress for 1968?s ‘Funny Girl’. The multi-talented singer has also won 8 Grammys, 5 Emmys and has sold over 140 million records.
According to Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) she is the best-selling female artist on the Top Selling Artist List, and the only female recording artist in the Top Ten. She also shares the distinction with Frank Sinatra, Cher and Shirley Jones, of being awarded an acting Oscar and also recording a number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“In an evening that celebrates the artistry of movies and music, how could the telecast be complete without Barbra Streisand?” We are honored that she has agreed to do a very special performance on this year’s Oscars, her first time singing on the show in 36 years,” award producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement.
Streisand will join contemporary pop divas Adele, who will perform Skyfall‘s Oscar-nominated title song, and Norah Jones, who will perform the Oscar-nominated ‘Everybody Needs a Best Friend’ from ‘Ted’.
Tributes to movie musicals and the James Bond franchise, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, are also planned.
The 85th Academy Awards will air live on 24 Feb on ABC.
